Park Residence

This project responds to a brief of single occupancy artist residency and studio. Situated in a local park, key strategies were ensuring inspiring views while maintaining a degree of privacy.

Ergonomics studies, ascertaining spatial requirements of the home

Planar surfaces serve as private gallery space, and adjacent walls provide visual block for privacy. A skylight runs around the edge of the room providing bright space, and the concrete wrap-around headboard both provides protective sleep space and support for the ‘floating’ roof.

Rammed earth construction allows the building to feel connected to the earth and nature from which its artists seek inspiration, the long west wall acting as a screen from the public, while the southern facade opens to the views down the hill.

With zones denoted by flooring material, and a central reflective water cascade acting as a private light well into the adjacent spaces, the building’s spatial separations mediate and support private activities in the park’s public setting.
